Triple crown for Varsha in National cue sports

Pune, Jan 23 (IANS) Bangalore’s Varsha Sanjeev notched a creditable triple crown by winning the junior girls snooker event in the Manisha Constructions National Billiards and Snooker Championship here Monday.

Varsha, who had won the sub-junior billiards and snooker titles, added the junior snooker crown to her kitty with a 26-73, 69-22, 66-41 win over I. Lahiri Sinaprra of Andhra Pradesh in the final.

Varsha was in line for the fourth title but was edged out by arch-rival Keerat Bhandal of Delhi in the junior billiards final. Keerat won 132-126.

Meanwhile, in the preliminary league of senior snooker event, title contender Pankaj Advani scored three centuries while winning both his Group A matches. Advani defeated UP’s Kankan Shamshi 3-0 with a break of 102 in the first frame and then defeated Durga Prasad of the Railways 3-0 aided by runs of 102 in the first and 100 in the third frame.

In Group C, Brijesh Damani chalked up three wins, including a 3-0 decision against former champion Geet Sethi with a break of 100 in the first frame. Incidentally, Sethi withdrew from the tournament citing personal reasons.

Others to notch century breaks were West Bengal’s Shakeel Ahmed, Ashok Shandilya of the Railways and PSPB’s Sourav Kothari.

In Group H, defending champion Alok Kumar of PSPB crashed to a 3-1 defeat against home player Vishal Madan while Gujarat’s Parthiv Jhaveri accounted for Rafat Habib of Railways 3-2.
