Tri-nation Twenty20 tournament proposed for next year

New Delhi, Oct 2 (IANS) India, Australia and South Africa will play in a Twenty20 Super Series to be held next year.”It will be somewhat similar to the Tri-Nations rugby series,” Gerald Majola, chief executive of Cricket South Africa (CSA), was quoted as saying in Cricinfo.

“It will be happening next year, and the matches will be held in South Africa and Australia.”

The tournament faces several hurdles like finding a window in an already crowded calendar, and negotiating the International Cricket Council (ICC) ruling that allows a maximum of seven Twenty20 matches a year.

Majola said the proposed series will have a distinct identity of its own.

“At this point of time, we are confident that it will take place but we haven’t finalised venues, details of the prize money or sponsorship,” he said.

The international calendar for next year is crammed with the Ashes, World Twenty20 in England as well as Champions Twenty20 League and a one-day series between India and Australia. The ICC schedule for next year would also need to squeze in the postponed Champions Trophy.
