Trevor Bayne wins Daytona 500 race
February 21st, 2011 - 8:00 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Feb 21 (THAINDIAN NEWS) 20-year-old Trevor Bayne won the wild Daytona 500 race on Sunday after just his second start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
With his win, Bayne became the youngest driver to win the Daytona 500. The feat really shocked Bayne as he took to the radio and told the fans how shocked he was.
After the race, Bayne took to the radio and said that, “Are you kidding me? …Am I dreaming right now?.. I don’t even know where to go.”
The race was as important for Bayne as it was for the history of the race. In the 53-year history of the Great American Race, this race was the most improbable. Bayne held off a strong challenge from Carl Edwards to win the race at .118 seconds earlier.
Several drivers fell victims to the revamped 2.5-mile speedway on Sunday. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ryan Newman were taken out of contention during the race after accidents on the backstretch.
Bayne was in the race against more experienced drivers like Tony Stewart, Bobby Labonte, Mark Martin and Kurt Busch. Ironically, they have been chasing the Daytona 500 title for years now and lost it to someone who has tried it for just two seasons.
