Top squash stars to skip Punj Lloyd Masters

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Some of the star squash players will be missing in action at the Punj Llyod PSA and WSPA Masters that starts here Tuesday at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.World no.1 Ramy Ashour, from Egypt, his compatriot Karim Darwish and Frenchman Gregory Gaultier have withdrawn from the $192,500 tournament with hamstring injuries. In the women’s section, world no.1 Nicol David from Malaysia has also decided to give it a miss and in her absence Australian Kasey Brown will be the star attraction.

In the men’s section, world no.2 Nick Matthew of England will be the top seed while his fellow countryman no.4 James Willstrop and another Eyptian Amr Shabana will be the top attractions in the tournament.

World no.22 Saurav Ghosal and Harinder Pal Sandhu, a wildcard, will be leading the Indian challenge.

Matthew has some fond memories of the venue as in October he won the gold in the singles and the doubles event at the Commonwealth Games.

He wants to end the year as no.1

“I don’t think the absence of some top players is a matter of concern. We still have a lot to play for. Personally for me, the number one ranking is at stake and I want to end the year on high,” he said.
