Today is ‘National Golf Day’
October 4th, 2011 - 7:30 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Oct 4 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 4th of October has been set aside as the National Golf Day. The day was instituted by the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) to provide means for the players to give back to society and the poor. Each year, the event is marked with a tournament between the golfers and the contributors. Varying fees are charged the contributors which are later used for charitable causes.
The event is also chaired by a top-ranked golfer. There is a controversy though. The 4th of October is not recognized by everyone as the National Golf Day. Some people celebrate the day in June and so far, the PGA has not come out clearly to state which day that the occasion falls.
The event has been ongoing since 1952 when the first event was held. At the first event, a total of $80,000 was raised on the day. The venue where the first National Golf Day event was held was the Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, in Lemont, Il. The proceeds were given out to various charities. At the first event, Dean Martin, Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis were all part of the PGA members who attended.
