Timing row over CWG opening ceremony resolved
May 22nd, 2010 - 10:30 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 22 (IANS) The controversy over the timing of the opening ceremony of the October 3-14 Commonwealth Games ended Saturday after a Group of Ministers meeting settled for a 7 p.m. start.
“We are happy that the issue has been resolved and the opening ceremony will be held at 7 pm,” Sports Minister M.S. Gill said.
The creative group — Bharat Bala, Shyam Benegal, Javed Akhtar and Prasoon Joshi — which conceived the opening and closing ceremonies of the event had decided on a 7.30 pm start as the laser show, special effects and fireworks will only have an impact after dark.
The row began when the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) asked the starting time to be shifted to 5.30 p.m. as per their broadcast deal with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
