Tiger Woods to play in Irish charity pro-am in July
June 9th, 2010 - 7:53 pm ICT by BNO NewsLIMERICK, IRELAND (BNO NEWS) — Famed golfer Tiger Woods on Wednesday confirmed his participation in the JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am tournament which takes place in Ireland next month.
It will be the tournament’s fifth staging, which has been held every five years since 1990. Starting small in 1990, the event attracted several notable international golfers, including Jim Colbert, Bob Murphy and Tom Wargo, in 1995. The event, the biggest pro-am event of its kind in Europe, raised nearly 4 million Euros that year.
During the last staging, in 2005, the pro-am event raised over 31 million Euros which was allocated to 56 charities in the Irish mid-west region. In 2005, Tiger Woods, as well as Michael Campbell, Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie, as well as others, participated.
This year, the 36-hole pro-am will again take place at the Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort - a former Irish Open venue - in Adare, in Ireland’s Limerick County. It is set to start on July 5 and will last one day - ending on July 6.
“I am very happy to be joining this outstanding field,” Woods said. “Like my own foundation, I understand the importance and necessity of raising funds to help deserving individuals. This tournament does just that.”
The aim of the JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am is to support mid-western charities and groups in their work with the underprivileged and disadvantaged. All proceeds are donated in their entirety towards these groups.
“We are delighted Tiger has agreed to include the tournament in his schedule,” said tournament host JP McManus, who is also a businessman and racehorse owner. “Tiger has been a tremendous supporter of our endeavors to raise funds for causes in the region, and I am sure everyone will appreciate his participation and give him a great Irish welcome on his return to Adare.”
Eleven others on the world’s current top-15 ranked players have also confirmed they will play in next month’s event: Lee Westwood, Jim Furyk, Ian Poulter, Ernie Els, Luke Donald, Paul Casey, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Robert Allenby, Padraig Harrington - the 2005 champion - and Camilo Villegas. These players will be joined by a list of celebrities who are also committed to playing in the tournament, including film stars Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Douglas, Hugh Grant, Kyle MacLachlan and pop stars of Westlife.
