‘Threatened’ Capello plotted Becks’ public retirement plan ‘to put him in his place’

London, Aug 14 (ANI): The decision by England coach Fabio Capello to publicly announce ace midfielder David Beckham’s retirement from international football is being termed as a step by the Italian to “put him (Beckham) in his place.”
Capello told aides he was angry that the player was even considered as a possible future coach of England while he was being criticized for the Three Lions’ World Cup flop.
After the World Cup, Facebook pages emerged demanding Becks take over. The midfielder even got odds of 16/1 to take the job if Capello was sacked, The Sun reports.
Sources close to the England camp revealed Capello had been “agitated and prickly” about the coverage.
Beckham, who missed the World Cup with a torn Achilles tendon, has now told pals he wondered whether Capello’s termination of his England career during a TV interview on Wednesday night was designed to “show everyone who’s boss”.
A source close to Beckham said: “It is becoming the wider feeling among the England camp that Capello’s decision to behave in this way was almost settling a score.”
This is not the first time that differences have cropped up between the two. Capello as Real Madrid boss in 2007 vowed Beckham would never play for the club again, but later made a U-turn. (ANI)
