Thomson backs four-pronged pace for Melbourne Ashes Test
December 23rd, 2010 - 1:25 pm ICT by ANISydney, Dec 23(ANI): Former Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson has urged the national selectors to retain the four front-line quicks in the bowling line-up for the Boxing Day Test of the Ashes series in Melbourne.
Selectors are yet to decide whether they will stick with the pace attack which routed England during the third Test at Perth’s WACA Ground or blood left-arm spinner Michael Beer.
Should Beer make his debut, he will almost certainly replace Peter Siddle or Ben Hilfenhaus, as Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris both starred in Perth.
“Don’t worry about a spinner. Just keep the quicks. I think we can frighten the s— out of those blokes,” the Herald Sun quoted Thomson, as saying.
The 60-year-old was also supportive of the Australian side amid criticism over sledging incidents arising from Perth.
“It’s all part and parcel of the game. You are just trying to upset the guy’s concentration,” Thommo said.
“You’re out there for six hours, you get bored … you’ve got to say something,” he added.
The five-match series is currently tied at 1-1 (ANI)
