“The Superstars” to Return to ABC
June 5th, 2009 - 5:05 pm ICT by GDBlue Entertainment Sports Television is collaborating with Juma Entertainment to revive six episodes of the show “The Superstars” on ABC. The original show was aired on television in the mid-1970s as part of the Wide World of Sports on ABC and was subsequently revived in 1987, 1993, 1998 and 2002.
The show is set to premiere on June 23 at 8 pm and will feature eight celebrities paired with eight professional athletes, male and female, and they will take part in sports challenges including swimming, biking, kayaking and running. Each week a team will be eliminated until the final surviving team is crowned the winner. The pairs selected to feature on the show are:
Buffalo Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens and model Joanna Krupa;
former Major League Baseball player Jeff Kent and former Miss USA Ali Landry;
Former National Basketball Association player Robert Horry and actress Estella Warren;
Skier Bode Miller and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” star Paige Hemmis;
Skier Kristi Leskinen and “Dancing With the Stars” performer Maksim Chmerkovskiy;
Women’s National Basketball Association player Lisa Leslie and actor Dan Cortese;
Tennis player Jennifer Capriati and actor David Charvet; and
Soccer player Brandi Chastain and singer Julio Iglesias Jr.
ABC has announced that the host team will be led by John Saunders who is a very versatile commentator on ESPN and has experience in play-by-play commentary. Former NFL player and a previous contestant on The Superstars, Warren Sapp will join him to host the show. Warren is currently a studio analyst and game commentator on the NFL network. Also joining the host team is TV personality Jenn Brown. Jenn has been seen across networks like ESPN, CBS, NBC, E! Entertainment, CNN, ABC, CMT, the WB and HDNet and has lent a woman’s perspective to various sports presentations.
