“That was my race, I would have won the race”, says Massa
August 2nd, 2009 - 5:18 pm ICT by ANIBudapest (Hungary), Aug 2(ANI): Injured Formula One racing driver Felipe Massa speaking for the first time since cheating death in a freak accident during qualifying rounds for last Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix has insisted that had he not crashed out, he could have won the race.
“That was my race. I couldn’t believe it when they told me Lewis had won and team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was second,” The News of the World quoted Massa, as saying.
“I would have won the race. I know I am lucky to be alive - but I will race again,” he added.
The 28 year-old, was knocked unconscious after he was hit by a spring that flew off the rear of fellow Brazilian Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP car, which left his skull fractured and his eye was badly damaged.
It was also reported that the Brazilian had a fight with his brother, Eduardo, straight after waking up from a coma following life-saving brain surgery and also tried to rip out the tubes and drips that were helping his recovery.
“When I woke up I didn’t know why I was in hospital so I was asking ‘Why am I here?’ I was pulling all the tubes and my brother Eduardo tried to stop me so we had a fight,” he said.
The injured racer has also attributed his luck for being alive today, saying: “The accident was just so unlucky but I know I am lucky to be alive. I don’t remember anything of what happened.”
Massa had ended up in a tyre wall after the collision and was rushed to Budapest’s AEK Military Hospital with life-threatening head injuries. (ANI)
