Tennis officials hopeful of Bhupathi-Paes patch upMay 22nd, 2008 - 12:48 am ICT by admin
New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) All India Tennis Association (AITA) officials are hopeful that Mahesh Bhupathi will patch up with Leander Paes to play the doubles in the Beijing Olympics, despite his tough talk. Bhupathi in his email to AITA secretary general Anil Khanna has said it won’t be possible for him to play with Paes in the doubles of the Beijing Olympics due to lack of communication and preparation.
He also said that instead he wanted to pair up with Rohan Bopanna. Bhupathi also sent a copy of the mail to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief Suresh Kalmadi.
But tennis circles and senior IOA officials are confident both Bhupathi and Paes will put aside their differences and join forces in national interest.
IOA general secretary Randhir Singh said Wednesday he would try to broker peace between the two champion tennis stars.
Khanna, too, expressed similar views and said: “I don’t attach too much importance to media reports. Both Bhupathi and Paes are true professionals and they know what it is to play for the country and that too in the Olympics, where they have a great chance of a podium finish.”
