Teenage swimming sensation Seebohm to spearhead Oz challenge at CWG
August 27th, 2010 - 2:25 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Aug 27 (ANI): Teenage swimming sensation Emily Seebohm will spearhead the Australian team for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Seebohm has emerged as the new queen of the pool following her six-medal haul, including two gold at the recent the Pan Pacific tournament in the United States.
The 18-year-old will swim eight events at Delhi — 50m/100m/200m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 200m individual medley and two relays.
Showing she can step up to the plate in the absence of reigning Olympic champion Stephanie Rice, Seebohm defeated world record holder Ariana Kukors of the US in the 200m individual medley Pan Pacs final.
Seven swimmers were added to Australia’s Commonwealth Games team following their outstanding performances at the Pan Pacific.
Head coach Leigh Nugent announced on Friday that Melissa Gorman, Grace Loh, James Magnussen, Kenrick Monk, Mitchell Patterson, Kyle Richardson and Tessa Wallace were the new faces in the swimming team.
In all, 31 of the 52-strong team will be making their Commonwealth Games debut on the sub continent, The Courier Mail reports.
The Australian team consists of Seebohm, seven-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Leisel Jones, Geoff Huegill and former world record holder Eamon Sullivan. (ANI)
