Team India is best World Cup squad of country till date: Kumble
February 19th, 2011 - 11:49 am ICT by ANIFaridabad/Vadodara, Feb 19 (ANI): Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble has described the Team India World Cup squad as the best team till date.
The ace spinner, who happens to be the highest Indian wicket taker in Test cricket, said this on the sidelines of a function at school in Faridabad on Friday.
Kumble exuded confidence with the hopes of the current side bringing the World Cup home.
“It is not easy to select the World Cup squad, as you can choose only 15 people and this according to me is the best Indian team with respect to the 15 people who are representing us in the World Cup. So I hope that all of them perform well and India wins the World Cup,” said Kumble.
He expressed his disappointment at not being able to bring the World Cup home during his playing days that spanned for nearly two decades.
Kumble further said that though there is no single favourite contender for the World Cup, the chances of the Indian team are high.
“This time it will be an open World Cup. There is no one or two favourite teams. There are five to six good teams, which have been playing well. If you see the Indian team then they have also played well in the past one year; specially, during the domestic one day cricket matches we have done well and we are in a good form, which is good for the Indian team,” added Kumble.
Meanwhile, Nayan Mongia, former Indian wicket keeper, shared his views with the mediapersons at Vadodara in Gujarat.
He noted that it is very crucial for the men in blue to get a good start during the tournament.
“India’s first match is very important and crucial as it will lead to the team’s confidence building and a momentum is set other than the creation of a positive wave in the dressing room. I hope what happened with India in 2007 is not repeated and the team takes revenge for that,” said Mongia.
The World Cup is hosted by Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh and the opening ceremony was held amongst much fanfare and glamour in Dhaka on February 17.
The opening match of the tournament will be played in Dhaka on February 19 in which India will take on the hosts Bangladesh. (ANI)
