Jaipur, May 5 (IANS) Sohail Tanvir created a bowling record in Twenty20 cricket and inspired Rajasthan Royals to an eight-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) here Sunday night. Opting to bat first, Chennai Super Kings were bowled out for a paltry 109 runs in 19 overs, courtesy a fiery spell from Pakistani Tanvir, who wrecked the visiting team with his six for 14 from stipulated four overs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
The hosts sailed home at ease in 14.2 overs after losing only two wickets with opener Graeme Smith remaining not out on 35.
Tanvir’s spell reduced the clash for the top spot into a one-sided affair as the hosts chased the lowest target of the tournament so far and won their fifth consecutive game.
Rajasthan Royals have now moved up to the top spot in the IPL points table while Chennai Super Kings have slipped to the fourth place after suffering their second consecutive loss.
Tanvir made the most of the seamer-friendly conditions and gave the hosts a perfect start by picking up openers Parthiv Patel and Stephen Fleming in the very first over without any run on board.
He picked up his third scalp in the second over as Sivaramakrishna Vidyut (5) edged him to skipper Shane Warne at first slip.
Suddenly Super Kings were reeling at 11 for three and the Royals continued their dominance and tightened their noose around the visitors’ batting.
Super Kings kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Albie Morkel (42) and Suresh Raina (27) tried to give some stability but their efforts were not enough to save the day for the Chennai team.
Chasing 110 was not a big task for the Royals and openers Smith and Swapnil Asnodkar (32) gave them a good start by scoring 78 runs for the opening wicket. Yusuf Pathan (8) failed to fire and departed soon but Smith and Shane Watson guided Royals home.
