Tamil Nadu spinner Aushik denies Mumbai first innings lead
December 11th, 2009 - 10:48 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Tamil Nadu spinner Aushik Srinivas took seven wickets to deny Mumbai the crucial first-innings lead at Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy Super league tie here Friday.
Mumbai started the final day needing a further 193 runs to overtake Tamil Nadu’s imposing 501 with seven wickets in hand.
Left-arm spinner Srinivas, 16, dashed their hopes in the first hour of the morning with a brilliant spell by taking six wickets. Wasim Jaffer was the top scorer with 141 while Ajinkya Rahane made 98.
From 314/4, Mumbai collapsed and were all out for 366.
Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay, fresh from his exploits in the third Test against Sri Lanka, struck a blazing 154 in 118 balls that included 20 fours and five sixes. The visitors reached 253/3 in their second knock.
At Chandigarh, Punjab batsmen managed to draw their encounter against Orissa.
Punjab, set a target of 354 runs, were 192/4 on the last day of the match. Uday Kaul remained unbeaten on 73 while Pankaj Dharmani scored 40.
Orissa declared their second innings at 247/8 in the morning.
Punjab were all out for 177 in the first innings in reply to Orissa’s 283.
Having taken the first innings lead, Orissa added three points in their tally.
Tamil Nadu are already through to the quarter-finals from group A with 23 points from six matches. Punjab and Mumbai have 16 points each.
In group B, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh have made it to the quarter-finals with 23 and 18 points respectively. Delhi are on third place with 15 points followed by Baroda on 10 points.
Delhi will need a draw with a first innings in their last match against Bengal to race ahead of Baroda, which will have to get full points against Maharashtra.

At Delhi: Delhi 419 all out against Maharshtra 163 all out and 364 (Ankit Bawne 118, Rohit Motwani 61; Pradeep Sangwan 5-107, Parvinder Awana 3-83 and 112/0 (Virat Kohli 67 not out, Mithun Manhas 38 not out).
