Chennai, Dec 18 (IANS) The weather gods smiled on Tamil Nadu, who promptly took a crucial first innings lead against Gujarat — and with that three points — to advance to the quarter-finals of the Ranji Trophy Super League as their rain-affected cricket match ended in a tame draw here Saturday.Replying to Gujarat’s first innings total of 173 all out, Tamil Nadu, who were 158 for four overnight, declared at 240 for six with Subramaniam Badrinath being the top-scorer (84, 179b, 1 x 6, 6 x 4). Gujarat were 115 for four when the match was called off.

Tamil Nadu, with 17 points, finished third in Group A behind Mumbai (24) and the Railways (17) to advance to the quarter-finals where they take on Haryana, Dec 24-27 at Lahli, near Rohtak.

After much of the first day and whole of the third day’s play were washed out, Tamil Nadu, who desperately needed at least three points, finally succeeded as the rains stayed away Saturday.
