Tait backs CA’s one spinner policy for World Cup
January 19th, 2011 - 2:44 pm ICT by ANISydney, Jan 19 (ANI): Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait has said he is not surprised that selectors have chosen only one specialist spinner for the World Cup.
The decision to leave out Tasmania left-arm slow bowler Xavier Doherty from the 15-man World Cup squad announced on Tuesday leaves part-time spinners David Hussey and Steve Smith backing up spinner Nathan Hauritz and a four-man pace attack.
Tait said the pitches of India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka would not all be graveyards for fast bowlers.
“You put that pace attack (including Mitchell Johnson, Doug Bollinger and veteran Brett Lee) up against any pace attack in the world and I think it probably comes out number one,” Tait told reporters on Wednesday in Hobart.
“The selectors should be pretty happy with what they’ve chosen, for sure,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Tait, as saying.
Asked if he was surprised at chairman Andrew Hilditch’s selection panel opting for only one spinner, Tait said: “Not really no. The squad has a pretty good balance. We’ve got four pretty good fast bowlers and a good spin bowler.”
“We’ve got other batters who can bowl spin. Dave Hussey bowls good spin as well. So I think the balance of the squad is pretty good,” he said.
Hauritz has a modest ODI record in India of four wickets in seven matches at an average of 70.75 and struggled in the Test tour of India in October 2010. (ANI)
