Super Sunday to decide I-League champion

New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) The race for India’s inaugural I-League football tournament has gone to the wire with Dempo Sports Club and Churchill Brothers tied at 33 points after the penultimate round. Though Dempo’s better goal difference gives them an edge in the final round of games Sunday, both are in must-win situations. In the last round, Dempo need just a win against relegated Viva Kerala, while Churchill need a big win over Air India to make up for the goal difference. The only certainty is that the first I-league title will go to Goa.

Current form points to the worries of Dempo interim coach Mauricio Afonso as his team is without a win since the 11th round, the 4-1 rout of Sporting Clube de Goa being their last victory. Afonso’s boys have to win the last round and they should not find it difficult against Viva for whom the game is an inconsequential one as they have been already relegated.

For Churchill, the current goal difference of four may not be the right index when they go into the match against Air India. Since both the key matches are kicked-off at the same time, Churchill will not know what the right victory margin. In any case, Air India has acquired the reputation of being giant-killers.
