‘Stupid’ Crouch leaves Tottenham’s Champions League dreams in tatters

London, Apr 6 (ANI): Tottenham striker Peter Crouch was labelled “beyond stupid” after his red card left the club’s Champions League dreams in tatters.

While Tottenham had already gone 1-0 down to a header from Emmanuel Adebayor, the loss of Crouch left them toothless in attack and Harry Redknapp’s side went on to suffer a 4-0 loss to Real Madrid.

Crouch was booked for a lunge at Sergio Ramos and then picked up a second yellow for a 15th-minute foul on Marcelo.

“Peter Crouch is an intelligent boy but I cannot stick up for him. The second tackle was ridiculous. After he was booked for the first challenge, he needs to stay on his feet,” said ex-England and Tottenham ace Jamie Redknapp

TV analyst Redknapp, son of Spurs boss Harry, added: “Crouch has played hundreds of games. Champions League football, international football - but what he did was beyond stupid. He lost his head. He has cost his team-mates because it’s hard when you only play with 10 men.”

Tottenham chief Harry admitted he refused to speak to Crouch after Real Madrid inflicted the club’s worst ever Euro defeat, The Sun reports.

“I haven’t spoken to him. I was obviously disappointed. That was all we needed to go down to 10 men so early in the game. I haven’t seen a replay of the tackle. The referee made a decision, which I am sure he felt, was right. But Crouch shouldn’t have taken that chance that it might be red because he already had his first yellow card,” he said.

Tottenham, were on the back foot even before kick-off when Aaron Lennon pulled out of the starting line-up after feeling sick. (ANI)
