Stuart Broad could win Ashes for England like dad Chris: Mark Waugh
November 12th, 2010 - 4:35 pm ICT by ANISydney, Nov.12 (ANI): Stuart Broad could win Ashes for England like his dad Chris did in 1986, fears former Australian middle-order batsman Mark Waugh.
England’s last triumph in Australia in 1986-87 was decorated by three centuries by Chris Broad, including 112 in the innings victory, which wrapped up the urn in Melbourne at Christmas. Mike Gatting was England captain then.
The Aussies in 1986-87 included Waugh’s twin brother Steve and between them they would go on to plunder 5,404 runs and 16 Test tons off England over the next 15 years.
“Stuart Broad is a good cricketer like his father, and he should do well out here, but at this stage I don’t think he’s a great bowler: he is more a bowler of great spells. There is no doubting his talent, and with his height he will be suited to the conditions in Australia. Our batsmen will be wary because he generates good pace and he is tall enough to find that extra bounce,” The Mirror quoted Mark, as saying.
“Broad is probably one of the main danger men for us, and it will be interesting to see how Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke cope with the short stuff if he tries to rough them up. And we mustn’t overlook his batting - I have reservations about England’s top six, because they are not all coming into the Ashes on a roll of form,” he added.Broad’s firebrand nature, and inclination to scatter Aussie timber, is clearly a congenital gift he inherited from his father. Chris Broad was fined 1,000 pounds for smashing his stumps angrily with his bat after being dismissed for 139 in the Bicentennial Test in 1988.
It is a trait the Aussies secretly admire, and along with Graeme Swann they recognise 24-year-old Broad is the bowler most likely to undermine Ponting’s attempts to retrieve the Ashes. (ANI)
