Struggling Betis coach receives club’s vote of confidence

Madrid, Dec 6 (IANS) Under-pressure Betis coach Pepe Mel has received a vote of confidence from football club’s president Miguel Guillen.

Mel was expected to be sacked after his club’s 2-1 defeat to Osasuna Saturday as they have taken just one point from their last 10 matches and slipped to just above the relegation zone in La Liga.

Betis had been early season pace-setters in Spain after winning their first four matches of the campaign on their return to the La Liga following their promotion from the second division last season, Xinhua reported.

Mel had guided his side back to the La Liga and he received an award from a national newspaper in Spain last week for that work.

However, following his side’s positive start things turned sour, although Betis have been unlucky to lose their last two matches, conceding goals in injury time.

“Whatever happens Pepe Mel is our coach,” Guillen was quoted as saying by club’s official website.

“He (Mel) has the complete confidence of the club and the players and will remain our coach. The way we are playing we deserve a lot more points than we have,” added Guillen.

Mel is still under pressure, however, and his side face a difficult home match against third-placed Valencia Saturday.
