Strawberry business turns snooty at Wimbledon
June 20th, 2010 - 7:31 pm ICT by ANIJune 20 (ANI): Strawberries will be served at Wimbledon from the
same farm that supplies to a down-to-earth supermarket at a
cheaper price.
However, the fruit is being sold five times the price at the
Wimbledon.
The All England Club has an exclusive deal for the fruit.
Strawberries are bought from a picturesque farm in Kent at
around 25p a pop. But the ASDA is selling the same fruit at just
4.5p each.
From Monday onwards, the tennis fans will be picking up a pun
net of 10 strawberries with a dollop of cream for 2.50 pounds at
Wimbledon - up 25p on last year. But shoppers can pick up
identical Elsantas for just a pound for 300g at ASDA.
“Our strawberries are fresh each day and are washed, hulled,
served, and sold by staff who have to be paid. They are also
served with sugar and cream included in the price. We feel our
strawberries offer good value for money,” News of The World
quoted a spokesman for Wimbledon, as saying. (ANI)
