Strauss should stay as England’s ODI captain: Broad
April 13th, 2011 - 1:31 pm ICT by ANILondon, Apr 13 (ANI): Andrew Strauss should stay as skipper of the England one-day squad despite the team’s World Cup quarterfinal exit and 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Australia, said pacer Stuart Broad.
Strauss, who is on a six-week break from cricket following an arduous winter, is expected to decide next month whether to concentrate on captaining England only in Test matches.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan, a Daily Telegraph columnist, said last month that Broad was the man to take England forward, and added that he would “bring a different approach and different direction” to their cricket.
The Telegraph quoted Broad as saying that Strauss still commanded the support of the dressing room.
“It’s a huge compliment to have the most successful England captain to suggest that you have got the character to do something like that. My personal belief is that Straussy should keep going with the job,” he said.
“He’s done a fantastic job over the last couple of years when he has been captain and he’s one of our best one-day batsmen. It would be a real shame if he decided he couldn’t play one-day cricket any more,” Broad said.
“Hopefully he will continue. He’s certainly got the backing of the whole changing room and I think the criticism he got in the World Cup was a little bit harsh after the winter we had,” he added.
Broad is still sidelined by a broken rib, which forced him to return early from the World Cup. (ANI)
