Former Ohio State All American linebacker Chris Spielman, who will have his name inducted in the College Football Hall Of Fame (2010), was present with his wife Stefanie Spielman (in wheelchair) at a match held between Navy and Bucks on Saturday. Chris was honored, acknowledged at the event and was paid respect along with John Glenn.
Stefanie Speilman is a cancer survivor. The couple have become an icon of the perfect couple reportedly, after Chris have extended unwavering support to his wife in battling with cancer. The couple were honored on-field, and were greeted by Jim Tressel who shook hands with both of them. They were accompanied by their children.
Austin Spiltler of Ohio State said of Chris Spielman, “If you know anything about the linebacker tradition at Ohio State, Spielman is one of the first guys who comes to mind. You hear a lot about him. He really set this program apart as a linebacker. He helped start the tradition here.” Besides the regards that were conveyed for his sportsmanship, the man is also entitled for the courage and sincerity he has displayed in mitigating his domestic responsibilities. The player had taken a year off from his career when he was informed that Stefanie was a victim of breast cancer in 1999. He drew in the admiration of his fans as he dedicatedly shaved off his head (to look alike his chemo-therapied wife) going through that trying period.
Since 1999, atleast $5 million has been successfully raised for research purposes for breast cancer under Spielman Fund. The James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University is hosting a website, where Stephanie can be approached with queries on what is being done with the cancer funds, and one can also see the current amount of funds raised.
