Sri Lanka’s bankrupt cricket board dissolved
November 15th, 2011 - 9:27 pm ICT by IANSColombo, Nov 15 (IANS) Sri Lanka’s bankrupt cricket board has been dissolved and a new authority has been appointed, the sports ministry said Tuesday.
Sri Lanka Cricket has been beleaguered in financial difficulties after millions of dollars were spent on constructing three new stadiums for the Cricket World Cup held in March. The board has been dissolved by Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgama, Xinhua reported.
According to a statement, the ministry secretary has been appointed the competent authority to oversee the events of the sport until a new board is selected through elections.
Sri Lanka Cricket has been under criticism for corruption and becoming financially bankrupt after the World Cup and had not even been able to pay the salaries of the cricketers and staff.
