Sri Lanka seek Asian support for hosting Commonwealth Games
October 7th, 2011 - 7:55 pm ICT by IANSColombo, Oct 7 (IANS) Sri Lanka have sought support from Asian countries to secure the rights to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
A delegation from Asia arrived in the country Friday to inspect what Sri Lanka have to offer to host the games in Hambantota, in southern Sri Lanka.
The visit is the last in a series of regional “inward missions” ahead of the crucial vote next month to decide the host city for the Games, Xinhua reported.
“Everything other than the Velodrome is being developed regardless of the outcome of the bid and major infrastructure developments are already taking place including a new sea port, international airport, high capacity public transport system and new road network. Also already under construction is the futuristic ‘Sports City’ that will feature 90 percent of the venues and facilities for the 2018 Games,” the Sri Lankan Commonwealth Games Organising committee said.
Sri Lanka are competing against Gold Coast in Australia to host the Games.
Already delegations from the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and Oceania have visited Sri Lanka to evaluate the bid for the games.
On visiting the country last week, the delegation from Oceania hailed Sri Lanka’s bid as “excellent and competitive”.
