Sports Minister Maken will try to convince Negre
September 12th, 2011 - 10:25 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS) The existence of two separate bodies governing hockey in the country should not come in the way of India hosting the Champions Trophy and other major international events it has been allotted and Sports Minister Ajay Maken will try to convince International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Leonardo Negre about efforts to unify Hockey India (HI) and the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) to overcome legal hurdles, an official said Monday.
India lost the hosting rights of this year’s Champions Trophy hockey tournament after the FIH objected to the temporary power-sharing formula between HI and IHF to run the sport in the country. A replacement host is yet to be announced.
HI and IHF officials met Maken at the sports ministry here Monday and discussed ways to convince Negre.
“We discussed the issues that we would raise in tomorrow’s meeting. We have to convince Negre,” HI secretary Narendra Batra told IANS.
IHF president R.K. Shetty said the teams are being fielded by HI and there should be no problem in India hosting the Champions Trophy.
“FIH recognised HI and all the teams are being fielded by HI. The merger between HI and IHF is for administration (purposes),” he said.
