Kolkata, July 28 (IANS) Mohammedan Sporting snatched the leader’s tag from Mohun Bagan with a 2-1 victory in the Indian Football Association (IFA)-Sahara Calcutta Football League here Monday. Both teams were locked 1-1 till the penultimate minute before an own goal from Mohan Raj spelt doom for his side Bagan at the Salt Lake stadium.

Earlier, Pachau Lalampuiya cancelled a first half strike by Sporting’s Theodore Sunday.

Sporting, now on a dozen points from five games, were the better team, particularly in the opening session when they held total sway.

Bagan now occupy the second spot with 10 points from five games.

The winners went ahead in the 21st minute when Bagan’s Peter Odafe brought down a dangerously advancing Sunday inside his own box. The Liberian made no mistake in banging home the resultant penalty.

Sporting continued to attack, but muffed up a golden opportunity to increase the margin at the stroke of half time. Medio Satyajit Bose set up Rajib Ghosh with a measured pass, but the latter failed to connect close to the goal and with Bagan custodian Sangram Mukherjee at his mercy.

Bagan went on the offensive after the breather, with the redoubtable Brazilian striker Jose Barreto marshalling their moves. The green and maroon brigade restored parity in the 56th minute, when Barreto passed on to Shylo Malswamtluanga, who in turn released the ball Lalampuiya to tap in a right footer.

Six minutes later, Barreto was again in the spotlight as he went for a snap header, which Sporting goalkeeper Nasim Akhtar dived to the left and saved.

However, Sporting had the last laugh. With the match having rolled into added time, Sporting’s Bimal Pariyar followed the ball closely and entered the Bagan box, but Anand Vasan got to the ball before the Sporting player and passed on to Mohan Raj. The defender failed to keep his cool and put the ball home in trying to go for a clearance.
