Singapore, Nov 14 (IANS) Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano won the Barclays Singapore Open golf in the playoff Monday as the tournament dragged on to a fifth day despite being shortened by heavy thunderstorms.

Leaders Fernandez-Castano and Juvic Pagunsan of the Philippines ended the third round Sunday at 14-under-par as the following sudden-death playoff was suspended due to rain. The 72-hole tournament was shortened to 54 holes after heavy rain kept players off the green for most part of the morning and afternoon.

Pagunsan, 33, had a chance to win on the first extra hole, but he pushed a five-foot birdie putt wide and when he missed from 10 feet the second time they played the 18th, Fernandez-Castano made him pay by sinking in an eight-foot putt.

Fernandez-Castano recorded his first tournament victory in three years and pocketed the $1 million of prize money. It was the Spaniard’s fifth European Tour title.
