Jesse Ryder Wellington, Jan 22(ANI): A five-wicket haul from fast bowler Tim Southee and a quickfire half-century from Jesse Ryder helped New Zealand beat Pakistan by nine wickets in the opening ODI at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium today.

Southee finished with figures of 5-33 from 9.3 overs, as the Black Caps bowled out Pakistan for 124 in 37.3 overs, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi had won the toss and opted to bat first, but the visitors were rocked early and hardly had any time to recover against a disciplined attack.

Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq’s 50 from 88 balls was the only innings of substance from Pakistan.

In addition to Southee’s first five-wicket ODI haul, fast bowler Hamish Bennett scalped 3-26 from eight overs, while injury plagued all-rounder Jacob Oram took 2-33 from 10 overs.

Wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum finished with five catches behind the stumps.

The Black Caps then cruised to their victory target with over 32 overs to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the six-match series.

Martin Guptill (40 not out) and Ryder (55 from 34 balls) put on 84 for the first wicket.

Ryder in particular was in no mood to hang around as he hit six fours and two sixes before being dismissed by Sohail Tanvir.

Guptill and Ross Taylor (23 not out) saw New Zealand home in just 17.2 overs.

The emphatic victory ended the Black Caps’ streak of 11 consecutive defeats in ODIs. (ANI)
