South Zone beat North in Deodhar TrophyMarch 23rd, 2008 - 10:34 pm ICT by admin
Vishakapatnam, March 23 (IANS) South Zone registered their first victory in Deodhar Trophy tournament, defeating North Zone comprehensively by 42-runs at the District Cricket Association Stadium here Sunday. Put in to bat first, South Zone scored 247 for nine but North could manage only 205 for nine.
North captain Gautam Gambhir elected to field on a track that looked to assist bowlers in the initial phase.
A patient 70-run opening wicket stand between Robin Uthappa and S. Vidyut thwarted North’s hopes of any early inroads. Vidyut was the first wicket to fall, scoring 37 off 48 deliveries while Uthappa made an uncharacteristic 57 off 91 balls.
Wicket-keeper Dinesh Kaarthick scored a quick-fire 40 (45 balls, 5×4s), while A. S. Yadav 31 (29 balls, 3×4s, 2×6s) and Vinay Kumar (31 from 19 balls) helped South score 247 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs.
Punjab’s Manpreet Gony was the pick of North bowlers, scalping four wickets for 52, while under-19 World Cup winning side member Pradeep Sangwan finished with two for 48.
In reply, North started their innings steadily, scoring 78 runs for the loss of one wicket after 16 overs. But in the very next over, Gnaneswara Rao struck twice to remove in-form Gambhir (43 off 37 balls), and wicketkeeper Uday Kaul for (31 off 58 balls).
All-rounder Rajat Bhatia’s fighting 62 off 74 balls, which was studded with three fours and three sixes, was not enough to save North as left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha ran through the lower order, taking 3 for 20 in his 10 overs. Rao, who finished with figures of 3 for 47, ably supported Ojha.
In the end, North could manage only 205 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs.
The match between Central Zone and East Zone at Hyderabad was washed out without a ball being bowled. Central has already won the tournament with 17 points out of their four matches.
