Somdev overpowers Prakash in Australian Open qualifiers (Lead)

Melbourne, Jan 14 (IANS) Indian tennis’ latest find Somdev Devvarman recovered from mid-match jitters to beat Prakash Amritraj and moved into the second round of men’s qualifying singles at the Australian Open here Wednesday.Fresh from his success at the ATP Chennai Open where he reached the finals, Somdev, ranked 154, beat Prakash 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in nearly one and a half hours.

Prakash, ranked 209 and son of tennis great Vijay Amritraj, hit more winners (21 to Somdev’s 13), but it was the unforced winners by the India’s no. 2 player that let him down. Prakash made 15 unforced errors to Somdev’s six.

“It was a very well played match. Prakash played a great second set and fought well throughout the entire match. The third set was really close and the match came down to a couple points. I’m glad to get through,” Somdev said.

Somdev next meets Poland’s Lukasz Kubot Friday, who beat Frenchmen Edouard Roger Vasselin 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

“I play a very good player in Kubot in my next match. I will have play well to beat him.”
