Solid back nine sees Jeev card 70 in third round

Doha, Jan 24 (IANS) A solid back nine with three birdies saw India’s top golfer Jeev Milkha Singh finish the third round in two-under 70 to move up to tied 31st with one more round to go in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters golf tournament here Saturday.Meanwhile, Jyoti Randhawa shot an even par 72 to drop from 25th to 36th. The other two Indians, Shiv Kapur and S.S.P. Chowrasia had missed the cut.

Jeev was one-over through the front nine, but then birdies on 10th and 11th and 16th saw him come back in 33 and finish the day at 70. He is now four-under 212.

Randhawa opened with a birdie but then ran into a rough patch with a bogeys on third and sixth and double on ninth. On the back nine, he had birdies on 10th and then three in a row from 15th to 17th but again finished with a bogey for his 72. He is now three-under 213 in tied 36th.

The leader was Alvaro Quiros of Mexico, who sizzled with a flawless eight-under 64, rose to 16-under 200 and went one ahead of overnight leader South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen (69), who is at 15-under at the $2.5 million Commercialbank Qatar Masters, Presented by Dolphin Energy, at Doha Golf Club.

Henrik Stenson of Sweden and Maarten Lafeber of the Netherlands with rounds of 66 each were 12-under in tied third and Scotland’s Andrew Coltart (70) was fifth at 11-under.
