Sodhi wins gold in World Cup shooting final
October 4th, 2011 - 8:56 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS) Defending champion Ronjan Sodhi won gold in double trap shooting at the World Cup final defeating China’s Hu Binyuan in a nail-biting tiebreaker finish at Al Ain in the UAE Tuesday.
Sodhi along with Hu shot a total of 187/200 in the finals before finally clinching gold in the tie-shoot. He is the first Indian to defend a World Cup final title in shooting.
“To win back-to-back titles is an amazing feeling. The competition was tough. I hope to continue with this performance and hopefully will do better with time,” said Sodhi, who is ranked eighth in the world.
Sodhi earlier in the qualifiers was placed second to Hu, but he upped his performance in the finals.
“Going into the finals, Hu was leading by two points and I knew that it would be a close affair. He missed initially to even it up. I dropped my last target but came back strong to win the title,” he said.
The Punjab shooter has been shooting at an excellent average of 142.6/150 in the last 26 international competitions and recently joined the Punjab Police as DySP.
Sodhi is supported by Mittal Champions Trust, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and Sahara India.
