Sochi 2014 unveils first Olympic digital emblem
December 1st, 2009 - 8:59 pm ICT by IANSMoscow, Dec 1 (DPA) The emblem for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi was unveiled Tuesday, based on the unique use of an internet domain name of the Russian organizing committee.
It is the first time that an internet domain features in an Olympic emblem.
The words “sochi.ru” are written above the number “2014,” with the five Olympic rings also part of the emblem. The number 2014 is written as a reflection under the word Sochi, both in blue letters. the .ru domain ending appears above the Olympic rings.
International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge named the emblem “very appealing… very creative, innovative.”
“Thanks to the growth of social media, the Sochi brand will no doubt spread like never before through these online channels reaching the youth of the world quickly and in a format that they appreciate.”
Sochi organizing committee CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko said that the emblem will help the world discover a new Russia.
“It is the gateway for the world to discover Russia’s passion, innovation and excellence through hosting the 2014 Olympic Winter Games,” he said.
The logo from Interbrand was chosen in an international tender and then approved in several surveys, Chernyshenko said.
