Soccer: Costa Rica wins 3- 1 over U.S.AJune 4th, 2009 - 7:43 pm ICT by GD
The World Cup qualifying match between Costa Rica and United States was telecast live on ESPN on Wednesday night. Costa Rica won over United States with a 3- 1 score on the board.
This was the fourth match in the Fourth round of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers. The US were put under instant pressure just 15 minutes into the game when Costa Rica scored 2 goals and got a lead of 2- 0.
The US was the top scoring team in the group of 6 teams. They had a total of 7 points, with runners up Costa Rica breathing down their neck with 6 points. Both teams had won 2 games in the first three matches. The match was held in the Estadio Ricardio Saprissa Ayma in Costa Rica. Costa Rica has been the third best team in CONCACAF for almost about a decade now.
US is to play host Honduras which is on June 6. The event will be held at the Soldier Field in Chicago. The outcome of the June 3 match does not really deter the United States chance to qualify in the World Cup unless it loses to Honduras on June 6.
The complete wash out at the Wednesday match was a little shocking. It was in contrast to the US team’s statistic till date. It might be that the terrain worked against their favor.
Ever since the first goal of the match was made in the first minute by the home team, United States seemed out of sync. Costa Rica’s Saborio took advantage of the weak defense of the opposition and sent the ball flying home to the net past US goal keeper Tim Howard. The US team’s lack of confidence urged Costa Rica on to win the game.
