‘Smug’ Collingwood wants to dominate Aussies and the world in ODIs
June 26th, 2010 - 2:01 pm ICT by ANILondon, Jun 26 (ANI): England’s leading one-day scorer and Twenty20 skipper, Paul Collingwood, wants to dominate the Australians in the remaining three matches of the ODI series.
Collingwood was stunned to find that he had overtaken Alec Stewart’s record of 4,677 runs in Thursday’s four-wicket win over Australia in Cardiff.
The milestone gave him a huge buzz as the Australians have mocked him for years.
“It was a huge surprise when they announced on the tannoy I’d got the record. There were a few Aussies even more surprised than me! It put a smile on my face,” The Sun quoted Collingwood, as saying.
Looking ahead to the next ODI against Australia, Collingwood said: “At the moment, we have supremacy. We put in a fantastic performance to beat them in the World Twenty20 and we hold the Ashes. Now we’re in a great position to win this series but we wouldn’t just be happy with that.
“We want to be the best one-day side in the world and we want to win the World Cup next year. If you look at Australia’s record over the last year or so, they still have that air of invincibility because they haven’t lost many games. But we are the better side at the moment,” he added.
Collingwood however expects the seats to empty during the third one-dayer at Old Trafford, due to football fever that has struck his countrymen.
“I’m sure the whole country wants to watch the football and I’d understand if suddenly there were empty seats. But we’ll be totally focused because we have a huge prize at stake.” (ANI)
