Slipper flung at Kalmadi (Second Lead)
April 26th, 2011 - 4:11 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 26 (IANS) An unemployed man Tuesday flung a slipper at former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi as he was entering the Patiala House court premises.
Kalmadi, who was arrested Monday by Central Bureau of Investigation for alleged financial irregularities in the granting of contracts for the October 2010 sporting event, spent the night in the CBI lockup.
As the Congress MP was walking to the court, a man, later identified as Kapil Thakur, first tried to break the police cordon and, when he failed, chucked a slipper.
Kalmadi looked a bit taken aback, but was immediately rushed into the courtroom by escorting policemen.
Thakur, wearing a T-shirt, was whisked away to the Tilak Marg police station. Police officers said they were questioning him. “He is unemployed and belongs to Madhya Pradesh,” the official told IANS.
Kalmadi, an MP from Pune, was arrested after nearly daylong questioning by the CBI at its headquarters here for alleged criminal conspiracy and overspending of public money in holding the Oct 3-14 Games last year.
Kalmadi was arrested for “conspiracy to favour a private firm in Switzerland”.
