Six killed in Kenya stadium stampede
October 24th, 2010 - 7:04 am ICT by IANSNairobi, Oct 24 (IANS) At least six football fans died and several were injured in a stampede at the gate of a stadium here in the Kenyan capital.
The incident occurred at the Nyayo National Stadium Saturday night during a Kenya Premier League match between old rivals AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, Xinhua reported.
With only a small section of the stadium covered by a roof, the majority of fans had to watch matches in the open. They ran out when it started to rain Saturday evening, but when the drizzle stopped, they all rushed back almost at the same time just before the 7 p.m. kick off.
The fans forced open one gate and everyone tried to rush in, causing the stampede.
This is the second time football fans have died at the stadium, which was banned in 2008 by FIFA after a stampede left one dead when Harambee Stars played Atlas Lions of Morroco.
