Shroff puts out a Chinese to enter final
May 20th, 2010 - 6:58 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 20 (IANS) Indian wildcard Kyra Shroff outplayed second-seeded Chinese Ran Tian 6-3, 6-4 to set up the final with fourth-seeded Chinese Zi Yang in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) girls Grade II tournament at the DLTA complex here Thursday.
The Indian challenge in the boys’ event, however, ended with Ronit Bisht going down to second-seeded Chinese Chuhan Wang 5-7, 5-7. Wang plays in the final third-seeded compatriot Bowen Ouyang who shocked top seed Liang-Chi Huang in a quality match 6-4, 6-2.
Shroff served big varying her pace to unsettle Tian. The Chinese was good in patches, but lacked consistency.
The Indian broke her in the fourth game to go a set up and after two hours she served out the match breaking her opponent in the ninth game of the second.
Zi overcame the first-set resistance from Zhaoxuan Yang before blanking her in the second to win 7-5, 6-0.
In the boys’ semifinal, seventh-seeded Bisht stroked fluently, but a rash of errors saw him going down. Wang’s better serve and solid groundstrokes carried him through.
The the two exchanged breaks twice before the Chinese came up with the decisive break in the snapped the Indian’s serve in the 12th game to take the first set.
The pattern remained unchanged in the second set with Bisht trailing 2-4, but broke back in the seventh to even out things. Just when he looked like forcing a tie-break, Bisht slumped into errors and the match was gone as he buried a forehand into the net in the 12th game.
