texasJan 8, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Texas Longhorns had to play in the face of a number of injuries in the game against Alabama. The team seemed to be hit by serious bad luck as they kept losing one player after another on account of injuries, and unfortunately for the team, the back up was neither good nor reliable. The first one to leave the field with an injury was Colt McCoy, and the team substituted him with Vince Young. He was followed soon after by Garrett Gilbert. Thankfully, the one to replace Garrett Gilbert proved to be the only saving grace (although they again went down like a sinking ship) of the team, Sherrod Harris.

Garrett Gilbert was hurt in the arm when he got drilled in the sidelines by Courtney Upshaw as he tried to make a pass attempt, on the third down. After that, Sherrod Harris, who is down in the reserve roster of the Texas Longhorns as the junior third string quarterback, was sent to the field to take over the place of the injured player. In the beginning, it was being speculated if he would be able to play up to the expectations that had built up around him, considering the crucial position he held.

Unfortunately, even Sherrod Harris could not do anything for the team, although he did prove to be a promising player, and the Texas Longhorns lost the game to Alabama. This loss marked the first for the Texas Longhorns in a series of 14 games; they had won the last 13 games. The only explanation could be that the loss of two players came down too heavy on the team.

Um…Sherrod Harris did not play in the game, although he should have since Gilbert was ineffective for most of the game and Harris’s scrambling ability could have produced some semblence of an offense.

Amber is right…the author is an idiot.

gilbert was not ineffective…the offensive line was ineffective in keeping alabama off of Garrett. Also his receivers weren’t catching the ball for the first half. This could have been a different outcome even with Garrett playing if the coaches had called plays that worked for Garrett and not for McCoy…they didn’t even give Garrett a chance to show what he had until the 3rd quarter when he was allowed to actually throw. There was actually an inzone pass that could have resulted in a touchdown if it had been caught. The team fell apart because they all relied too heavily on Colt McCoy to get them the win. Garrett could have done the same thing if everyone had actually believed in him from the 1st quarter. and harris wouldn’t have done any better…there is a reason why they didn’t even give him a chance.

Have to disagree Amber…4 picks and a fumble = ineffective. The o-line played very well in pass protection, not surrendering a sack until the 4th Q. Malcolm Williams did drop a sure TD though.

It’s speculation as to how Harris would have performed, but I think a 4th-year Jr with loads of athleticism would have done better than a true freshman pocket passer. Also, Harris rips it up in the Spring Game every year.

As to your point that “there is a reason why they didn’t even give him a chance”, you know we’re talking about the same Mack Brown that started Chris Simms over Major Applewhite, right?

It’s speculation on how Harris would have played, but I’d rather take our chances with a 4th year Jr that can run over a true freshman pocket passer in that situation. Plus, Harris rips it up in the Spring Game every year. From what I’ve seen, he is very capable and even explosive at times.

Is this a joke…or an attempt to rewrite history?! Let me guess, this is from the same source who says the Holocaust never happened?!

Garrett grew up before our eyes…especially after the coaches stopped calling predictable, conservative plays that tied his hands and played perfectly to what the defense expected. He threw excellent passes that were dropped at least 6 times…3 of them by #9, one of which was for a touchdown! Other good passes dropped by offense was from #4, #8, and #23…they finally gained confidence in Garrett and winning without McCoy in the 3rd quarter…too little too late. By the way, the shovel pass was wobbled by the receiver and then intercepted, again, not Garrett’s fault. And he did not trip #23, he tripped on his own. There was a serious lack of focus from the offense after the loss of McCoy for 2 quarters!

To keep it real, Garrett did have 8 poor incomplete passes from throwing under pressure…but he did a brilliant job under the circumstances! He gained invaluable experience that will serve him and the Longhorns very well going forward!
