According to reports, San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman is supposed to have been arrested on Sunday at 8:30 a.m., following the charges filed by his girlfriend, the reality television star, Tila Tequila. According to Lt. Gary Steadman of the San Diego County Sheriff, the 27 year old Tequila is said to have signed a citizen’s arrest warrant and accused Merriman of battery and false imprisonment. Both of the charges amount to felonies.

Tequila has stated that Merriman has tried to forcibly restrain her when she had attempted to leave his home and in the attempt had choked her. Tequila has also said that the NFL player thrown her to the ground in the tussle that had ensued, following the struggle between the two.

Speaking at a news conference, Jan Caldwell of the Sheriff’s Department said that deputies had responded to a call at around 3:45 a.m. to Merriman’s residence located in Poway, north of San Diego, after receiving a call from a woman who had claimed that the Charger’s star had manhandled her at his residence.

Merriman’s lawyer has stated that he is confident that the District Attorney’s Office would not be charging Merriman with the felonies. Said Todd Macaluso, the attorney for Merriman, “There was absolutely no wrongdoing on the part of Mr. Merriman. He essentially was doing what was appropriate under the circumstances in trying to protect the safety of Miss Tequila.”

Macaluso widely disputed the claims of abuse that have been made by the reality television star. Apparently, it is being indicated that Tequila was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
