Shane warns Monty

London, May 30 (IANS) Australian spin wizard Shane Warne has warned England’s left-arm spinner Monty Panesar that his career will be in danger if he doesn’t learn some new tricks.
Warne, who has been England’s nemesis with 195 wickets from 36 Ashes Test, feels that Panesar is a jewel but is not able to grow.

In his updated version of the book Shane Warne’s Century, the Australian wrote: “Panesar is one of the jewels of the game today. But he’s stalled at the moment. I want to see improvement and different plans and strategies.”

Panesar’s career is now in danger after Graeme Swann usurped his crown as England’s No.1 spinner.

Warne feels that Panesar is an attacking bowler and will learn as he plays more in different conditions.

“Panesar is a proper attacking spinner who will win matches for England as a strike bowler. As he plays in different conditions, he will learn. If not, he will stay as he is and not improve,” he said.

Panesar spoke to Warne after England’s 5-0 whitewash in Australia in 2006-7 and went away armed with new ideas about his craft.

Warne recalled: “I got the impression he had prepared what he wanted to ask, and it was quite funny when I found out he’d asked Mike Hussey whether he thought I would talk to him… Spinners could soon seek him out for the secrets of his own success.”

Warne also said that England’s Ashes challenge this summer will be poorer if fast bowler Steve Harmison - whose 221 Test wickets put him in the top 10 Englishmen in the alltime charts - plays no part.

“There will be quite a lot of regret in England if Harmison is not involved in the 2009 Ashes. He played a massive part in the 2005 Ashes win. He set the tone for the series by hitting Justin Langer on the elbow second ball and then hitting Ricky Ponting on the head,” he said.
