Shane Hmiel recovering after surgery

Indianapolis, Oct 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Shane Hmiel’s mother, Lisa Hmiel has revealed that her NASCAR driver son is showing signs of progress.

Lisa said this on Monday just hours before Shane underwent a lengthy but successful surgery at an Indianapolis hospital.

The driver’s family has created a Facebook page entitled “Shane Hmiel – Road to Recovery”. The family wishes to keep the numerous fans of the driver updated on his recovery.

The 30-year-old driver had a horrible crash on Saturday during the United States Auto Club (USAC) Silver Crown race in Terre Haute, Ind. The driver was airlifted to the Indianapolis’ Methodist Hospital following the crash that resulting in severe injuries to the driver’s head, back and neck.

Shane’s father, Steve Hmiel is the competition director for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing team.

Lisa posted on the created page on Facebook that though Shane was mostly “sleeping” on Monday, he did nod when she spoke to him and he managed to open his eyes when his father spoke to him. Shane’s recovery is expected to be a long one considering the extent of injury that he suffered.

Lisa pleaded for prayers from Shane’s fans during this period. The driver is a former winner of NASCAR’s 2004 Camping World Truck Series before he received a lifetime ban from NASCAR for failing three drug tests in 2006.

The driver promised his fans that he has turned a new leaf and currently races in the USAC.
