Seventeen killed as truck overturns in Gujarat
November 2nd, 2010 - 10:38 pm ICT by IANSAhmedabad, Nov 2 (IANS) Seventeen people, including four women and three children, were killed and four injured when a truck overturned on a state highway in Anand district Tuesday, police said.
The mishap occurred on the Tarapur-Vataman Chokdi state highway, when the soil-laden truck, with several labourers sitting atop, lurched into a roadside ditch.
“The deaths were caused by suffocation, as the labourers were buried under the mud,” police said.
The persons travelling in the driver’s cabin survived with injuries.
“The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, while the driver is absconding,” police added.
The labourers were on their way from a construction site in Surat, and were returning to their homes in Saurashtra for the Diwali holidays, police added.
