Setanta to telecast IPL matches in Britain

Mumbai, Feb 27 (IANS) Setanta Sports, a leading international sports broadcaster, will telecast the DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket matches in Britain for five years beginning April, it was announced here Wednesday. Setanta Sports will commence its exclusive broadcast of all 59 games taking place across India from April 18. The final of the tournament, sanctioned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will be played June 1.

“The IPL would like to welcome Setanta Sports as its newest broadcast partner and is pleased to be working with it for the broadcast of the IPL in the territory of United Kingdom, and is confident that this will be a successful working partnership for the next five years,” said IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi.

Each of the eight teams will play one another twice, the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals to be played May 30 and 31. The big majority of the matches will be day-night affairs and Setanta will all games exclusively live.

The eight competing teams are Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to acquire these rights and add another major sport to Setanta’s programme line-up. Twenty20 cricket has been a phenomenal success and this tournament with all its world-class players is sure to capture the imagination of sports fans young and old,” Trevor East, Setanta’s director of sport, said.
