Security for 2010 Delhi Games in place: Sports Minister

March 16th, 2009 - 7:40 pm ICT by IANS

New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) Sport Minister M.S Gill Monday said security concerns raised by Commonwealth Games officials were “hypothetical” and that there need not be any apprehensions over the safety and security during the 2010 New Delhi Games.
Gill was reacting to reports in Australian media quoting Australian Commonwealth Games Association CEO Perry Crosswhite as saying that a security assessment one month before the Games would be crucial in deciding the fate of the event.

Concerns over security have heightened following the Mumbai terror strike last November and the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore earlier this month.

Gill clarified that security has been receiving constant attention to ensure smooth conduct of the Games.

“I wish Commonwealth Games officials would not raise such hypothetical concerns when the Games are still a year and half away,” Gill said in a statement.

“Michael Fennell, the Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation along with officials was here a few weeks ago. He went back fully satisfied after discussions with me and the Lt. Governor and Chief Minister of Delhi.”
