London, Feb 12 (IANS) Former Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher escaped a motorbike accident with minor injuries in Spain.
The German was testing his Honda 1000 CBR-Fireblade at a racetrack in Cartagena, Spain, Wednesday when the accident took place and he was then taken to hospital. He was released from the hospital Thursday.
“I had an accident at the biking tests in Cartagena, and to be safe I went to a hospital. I was driving down start-finish and when breaking into the first corner I hit some bumps which made me fall. The checks in the hospital showed nothing and I am fine. Therefore, I went back home at the evening,” Schumacher said on his official website.
“Thanks a lot for the many wishes for recovery but I am fine as well today. Maybe I am not as flexible as I usually am but all checks showed no results,” he added.
The doctors diagnosed a mild concussion, while Schumacher himself complained of pain in his right wrist.
The 40-year-old Schumacher retired from Formula One in 2006 after winning 91 races in a 16-year career with Jordan, Benetton and Ferrari encompassing 250 races.
He won his first title under Fabio Briatore at Benetton in 1994, won a record five consecutive drivers’ titles between 2000 and 2004 in Ferrari. He also claimed seven straight victories in individual Grand Prix during the 2004 season.
Schumacher is the only Formula One driver to have an entire season of podium finishes, a feat he accomplished in 2002.
