School bars footballs from playground
September 23rd, 2011 - 8:15 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Sep 23 (IANS) A school in Britain has banned footballs from the playground and now permits children to only play with soft sponge balls. An angry parent said his son “won’t learn if he’s not kicking a proper football”.
The school banned proper footballs in case children get hurt, The Sun reported.
The school said the decision follows “a number of incidents”.
Kirstie Davies, mother of Harvey James who is among the 300 pupils at Harewood Junior School in Tuffley, Gloucs, described the move as “stupid”.
“They’ve never had any fatal accidents because of a leather football.”
Another parent said: “It’s health and safety being stupid. My lad’s a bright little player and he won’t learn if he’s not kicking a proper football.”
“It’s ridiculous. Sponge balls do not behave like leather balls so it is not going to help young footballers,” said Nick Seaton of the Campaign for Real Education.
